Swimming calorie burn depends on body weight, active swim time, stroke, effort and conditions. A 70kg swimmer doing 30 minutes of steady freestyle is estimated around 294 kcal before individual variation.
Butterfly is usually the highest option in MET tables, followed by hard breaststroke, fast freestyle and hard backstroke. Technique and effort still change the real result.
This calculator uses the common MET equation: calories equals MET multiplied by 3.5, body weight in kilograms, and active minutes, divided by 200.
Open-water swimming can burn more when cold water, chop, current, sighting or navigation increase effort. It can also be easier when drafting or swimming with a wetsuit, so the calculator shows a wider range.
Use active swimming time for the best estimate. Long rests at the wall should usually be left out, while short rests inside a continuous set can be included if they are part of the effort.
No calculator can be exact without lab data. MET estimates are useful for comparing sessions, planning training load and getting a realistic range.
